What is the difference between lantus and levemir?

Lantus and levemir are long acting insulins, but it is suggested to take levemir bid and lantus 1 x day. They seem to have no peak action, so are more like basal insulin. They are usually used in conjunction with other shorter acting insulins or oral medications.
